Now in its 10th year, the
Gensler Brinkmann Scholarship was established as a memorial to Don Brinkmann, an inspirational and gifted interior designer who personified the essence of design vision and leadership. The program is open to students entering their
final year of a CIDA-accredited interior design program in the fall of 2010. Finalists will be considered for a paid internship in a Gensler regional office for the summer of 2010, and selected winners will also receive an acade…

Hello again Designers.
I was recently approached by a friend of mine to do a "joint" marketing project. His idea was to create a postcard that shows one half his company which deals in event planning and one half of mine. I think this is a great idea especially with us both starting out and with the economy being in such a crunch.
Bartering can be another form of marketing if you approach someone that has control over their company/small business. For instance, another friend of mine is starti…

I am a recent college grad and like many I am looking to work in the commercial design sector. My question to you all What suggestions would you give to a recent graduate who wants to work in commercial… should they work in residential until they find a commercial job just so they can have some real world experience? I am very eager to get started but im nervous that my skills are rusting away... I truly dont have a desire to work residential but I also dont want to lose touch. Does anyone know…

Fellow BIDS members...
After speaking with a friend of mine who is also in the Interior Design industry, I came to the conclusion that we are not alone. I know that some of you out there are experiencing some serious frustration because of several reasons which may include: 1) Not being able to find a suitable Mentor; 2) Not being able to find a job in the field; 3) How to start your own company; 4) Is this really the path you should take; and 5) How do you even start the path?
I think that at…

Hello folks.
I was wondering if any of the BIDS top Designers and Architects are willing to take on unpaid interns? I would like some more experience working with other designers, even though I have my own company. I think that I missed that aspect and would like to get real world experience as I'm sure others on this site would like to do also.

This was forwarded to me yesterday, and I thought I would share this with all of my friends since most of you have a website of your own. This is the top magazine for people with a website, and they are giving away subscriptions to boost their readership. The free subscription is the one on the right side of the web page below:

Feel free to pass it along to your friends also.

After I graduated from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, I immediately returned home. My son was there, my Mother was there... and truth be told, I disliked Pittsburgh 75% of the time. It was a no brainer. Upon my return, I learned that I should have been trying to make some Design connections in Ohio while I was making a ton of connections in Pittsburgh.
I was getting some feedback from ASID about a very prominent Interior Designer that happened to be Black/African American. I was excited to le…

Hello everyone.
Since moving to North Atlanta last year, I have yet to be able to network with other Architectural and Design professionals. And more than that, I have not been studying for any of the tests that I will be taking in the next 2 years! (Shame on me!) I've always work really well when there was at least one other person that was taking the test and I studied with them. So, I propose a BIDS Study Group.
I headed a study group in Ohio for the CKD/CBD tests. (Certified Kitchen Designer…

I just got word that The Art Institute of Pittsburgh- Online Division has accepted my application for re-enrollment. So hopefully, in the next couple of months, I will be finishing my Bachelor's Degree and moving on to The Academy of Art Institute or SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) for my Master's Degree next year. Pray for me that my journey if fruitful and that this venture is prosperous! Thank you all and I will keep you posted.

Every morning we should arise blessed with a sense of renewal. In spite of the current challenges we face today on many levels, we still seek to satisfy our search for inspiration and fulfillment… SO WE SHOP.
We have been told time and time again that the retail landscape is dramatically over stored, some say by hundreds of thousands of stores. This fact is undeniable, but finding a source for African-inspired home furnishings on a reliable basis still remains a huge challenge.
Clearly when mo…

Hello Everyone,
The White House will soon be re-decorated by the incoming President. Namely, Michelle Obama and her team of decorators. Apparently, the White House has a small staff which assists the new President with these very important decisions. There is a large inventory of furnishings Michelle can eventually choose from to replace any existing furniture. I believe she can hire an independent interior designer for their private quarters but must maintain the decor in the official areas of…
