Tamara Thompson New Year's Resolutions

Hello BIDS family... I was sitting here going over what I've actually accomplished this year and writing a new resolution for 2010 and was wondering: "Does anyone else make resolutions anymore?" Could it be that I am the only one that actually writes them down and crosses them off as they are completed? Please tell me I am not the only one here! Continue

Tamara Thompson Marketing In A Down Economy

Hello again Designers. I was recently approached by a friend of mine to do a "joint" marketing project. His idea was to create a postcard that shows one half his company which deals in event planning and one half of mine. I think this is a great idea especially with us both starting out and with the economy being in such a crunch. Bartering can be another form of marketing if you approach someone that has control over their company/small business. For instance, another friend of mine is starti… Continue

Tamara Thompson How do you get rid of frustration?

Fellow BIDS members... After speaking with a friend of mine who is also in the Interior Design industry, I came to the conclusion that we are not alone. I know that some of you out there are experiencing some serious frustration because of several reasons which may include: 1) Not being able to find a suitable Mentor; 2) Not being able to find a job in the field; 3) How to start your own company; 4) Is this really the path you should take; and 5) How do you even start the path? I think that at… Continue

Tamara Thompson Mentoring Programs

Hello folks. I was wondering if any of the BIDS top Designers and Architects are willing to take on unpaid interns? I think that I missed that aspect and would like to get real world experience as I'm sure others on this site would like to do also. Tammy Continue

Tamara Thompson The Positive and Negative

After I graduated from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, I immediately returned home. My son was there, my Mother was there... and truth be told, I disliked Pittsburgh 75% of the time. It was a no brainer. Upon my return, I learned that I should have been trying to make some Design connections in Ohio while I was making a ton of connections in Pittsburgh. I was getting some feedback from ASID about a very prominent Interior Designer that happened to be Black/African American. I was excited to le… Continue

Tamara Thompson NCIDQ, LEED, and CKD/CBD Study Groups

Hello everyone. Since moving to North Atlanta last year, I have yet to be able to network with other Architectural and Design professionals. And more than that, I have not been studying for any of the tests that I will be taking in the next 2 years! (Shame on me!) I've always work really well when there was at least one other person that was taking the test and I studied with them. So, I propose a BIDS Study Group. I headed a study group in Ohio for the CKD/CBD tests. (Certified Kitchen Designer… Continue

Bill Sands More than Just an Experience

Every morning we should arise blessed with a sense of renewal. In spite of the current challenges we face today on many levels, we still seek to satisfy our search for inspiration and fulfillment… SO WE SHOP. This fact is undeniable, but finding a source for African-inspired home furnishings on a reliable basis still remains a huge challenge. Clearly when mo… Continue

Alicia Valair The Obamas: Decorating the White House

Hello Everyone, The White House will soon be re-decorated by the incoming President. Namely, Michelle Obama and her team of decorators. Apparently, the White House has a small staff which assists the new President with these very important decisions. There is a large inventory of furnishings Michelle can eventually choose from to replace any existing furniture. I believe she can hire an independent interior designer for their private quarters but must maintain the decor in the official areas of… Continue

Your home should say something about you, not about what the current trends in interior design are. Of course, you can use these for inspiration and for new ways of looking at space, color and objects, but you should always keep in mind that you’ll be the one living in your home. Look at each [...]

Trend Spotlight: Chrome

Ah chrome. In the 50s and 60s, this was the ultimate modern material. Anything with a bit of chrome simply radiated technological advancement, superiority, and innovation. Now, we’ve all gotten over chrome as a symbol of modernity, and instead have incorporated it into interior design as an accent, a subtle nod to [...]

Trend Spotlight: Revive the Past

The great thing about modern interior design is how it builds on the past – and how the past can be brought back to life through a little artistic re-imagining. Design firms like Amir Ambiance have incorporated ancient stone, mural, stucco and other highly textured wall treatments into their repertoire, and it looks fantastic. [...]
